Mayflies are flying insects with long tails and wings that look like fishing flies — or fishing flies are made to look like mayflies. They are aquatic insects with an immature stage called a nymph that lives in fresh water.
The insects are known to hatch in spring — not necessarily in May. They eventually fly above their water residence in mass numbers and live a short adult life.
