Charleston, South Carolina police give an update on a mass shooting that occurred during a Bible study class at a historic African-American church in Charleston.
Eight churchgoers at a prayer meeting died at at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church; a ninth person died at a hospital,when a male/white gunman opened fire just after 9:00 p.m. Wednesday. Among the dead is the pastor of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney.
The gunman told one woman, who he let live, that he was letting her live so that she could tell people what happened.
Police described the gunman as clean-shaven with a slender build and sandy blond hair. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and Timberland boots. On Thursday morning, Charleston police handed out images of the man and his car taken from surveillance footage and asked for the public’s help in identifying him. Officials say they think he is still in the Charleston area, but they have contacted law enforcement authorities nearby to be on the lookout for the shooter.
