Debbie Lee, a mother whose son Marc Alan Lee died fighting for the United States in Ramadi, Iraq, told CNN she is offended by comments made about the city by Gen. Martin Dempsey.
Marc Alan Lee became the first Navy SEAL killed in the Iraq War when he was killed by insurgents on August 2, 2006. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart.
Martin E. “Marty” Dempsey is a United States Army general and is the 18th and current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After portraying the ISIS capture of Ramadi as no big deal — suggesting that Ramadi is “not symbolic in any way” and that losing it would not be a major setback., he later apologized to Debbie Lee.
“Gut wrenching. The sacrifices that were made, the blood that’s been shed.”
— Debbie Lee
After the withdrawal of US and Coalition forces in 2011, there was a struggle for Ramadi during the Iraqi insurgency by Iraq and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). On May 15 2015, CNN reported that Ramadi had fallen to ISIS after an assault that included suicide car bombs, mortars, and rocket launchers, and that ISIS captured over 50 high-level security personnel during the assault. The black ISIS flag was also raised at the Ramadi government headquarters with the total capture of Ramadi by ISIS forces.
