Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:17 PM Thursday to an apartment fire in the block of 400 East Lincoln Street Mount Prospect, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of smoke filling an upper floor apartment on Lincoln Street about about 10:49 a.m. Thursday. Mount Prospect firefighters quickly extinguished the fire within about 15 minutes.

Firefighters from Elk Grove Village, Elk Grove Township, Arlington Heights and Des Plaines assisted Mount Prospect for the working fire response.

A resident in the apartment was awakened by a smoke alarm, and reported the fire. The person was checked for smoke inhalation, but was not transported to the hospital by paramedics.

Firefighters suspect lightning caused the fire.

Lightning is also the suspected cause of a fire that was reported about 12:20 p.m. in the 200 block of Big Horn Drive. Grayslake firefighters arrived to find flames showing from about one-quarter of the second-floor front roof line. Flames were at least 10 feet into the air on the right side of the front of the house, over the garage. The fire was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm for mutual assistance from neighboring fire deparments.

The Hainesville fire was also extinguished in about 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Fox Lake, Gurnee, Lake Villa, Libertyville, Mundelein, Round Lake, Wauconda, and Waukegan assisted Grayslake firefighters either at the scene or by providing fire station coverage.

In the Mount Prospect incident, working smoke alarms promptly alerted the occupant of the fire. Fire Chief John Malcolm urges all residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their home and practice their home fire escape plans.

Chief Malcolm said, “Working smoke alarms provide an early warning, especially when you are asleep. If a fire occurs, having a working smoke alarm reduces your risk of dying in a home fire by 50 percent. Testing your smoke alarms monthly and practicing your home fire escape plan is one of the most important aspects of fire prevention in your home.”

Mount Prospect Fire Department will assist those residents that are unable to install or test their smoke alarms. For more information regarding smoke alarms or other fire safety questions, please contact the Mount Prospect Fire Prevention Bureau at (847) 818-5253.

Several thunderstorm cells with cloud-to-ground lightning have tracked across northern Illinois since early Thursday morning.
