Zion police responded about 2:00 PM Saturday report of a dispute or fight in the block of 2300 Gilead Avenue Zion, IL.. According to a statement issued late Saturday by Zion police, a male was shot about 2 p.m. near 24th and Galilee Avenue. The statement reported that officers were dispatched to the area around 1:55 p.m. in response to a 911 call regarding an argument or fight in the 2300 block of Gilead Avenue.
Zion police report that a male subject fled on foot when police arrived. Police officers then chased him southbound. A Zion police officer reportedly shot the individual near 24th and Galilee.
A Zion police statement reported that officers started giving medical aid to the male who was shot, and Zion paramedics transported him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The police officer was not injured, but was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.
Police also reported that a handgun was found at the scene. The Lake County Major Crime Task Force and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office were investigating the incident.
Relatives of the fatally-shot male report that his name is Justus Howell, and stated to reporters that he was shot twice in the back.
Howell lived in Waukegan.
