Mesa police responded about 8:45 a.m. to the Tri-City Inn, 1504 West Main Street after two people were shot in a motel room. One of the victims was killed and another injured.
The gunman then ran to a nearby restaurant run by the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) and was involved in a vehicular hijacking. An EVIT student was shot in the shoulder during the vehicular hijacking, according to police.
The gunman fled in the stolen car and stopped at Emelita Avenue and South Longmore area, where two more people were shot. One of the victims was a maintenance worker at an apartment complex near the intersection.
The shooter is still on the loose and police are actively searching for him, according to a Mesa Police Department source.
Police were converging in a residential area near Pueblo and Longmore Aves. Law enforcement on site includes SWAT teams from Mesa and Scottsdale and a Mesa police negotiation team.
Ryan Elliott Giroux has been identified as the shooter The suspect is known to have tattoos on his face and neck, including a Celtic cross on his chin and an “88” tattooed on his face near his left eye.
The suspect was hit with a stun gun and apprehended in a vacant condo, police said.
The suspect was completely covered from head-to-toe in a white biological evidence suit with a hood. The suspect’s hands were shackled in front of him.
