Arlington Heights police released information today that they have charged the 16-year-old driver of a Volkswagen GTI, that struck and killed a resident of Arlington Heights, with multiple vehicle code violations.
On March 9, 2015, at approximately 6:55 a.m., Arlington Heights firefighter/paramedics, and officers from the Arlington Heights Police Department responded to a report of a pedestrian hit by a car near the intersection of Grove Street and Kaspar Avenue near Pioneer Park in Arlington Heights.
Arlington Heights Police Department Traffic Crash Reconstructionists have completed the investigation into the traffic crash. As a result of the investigation, the 16-year-old driver Arlington Heights resident (identity not released) was charged with the following violations of the Illinois Motor Vehicle Code:
Reckless Driving
Speeding Over the Posted Limit
Failure to Yield Right-Of-Way to Pedestrian at Crosswalk
Driving with an Obstructed Windshield
The traffic crash involved a single vehicle and pedestrian. The vehicle, a 2012 Volkswagen GTI, was driven by a 16-year-old male and lone occupant. The Volkswagen GTI was westbound on Grove Street approaching the intersection at Kaspar Avenue when the pedestrian, Barbara Leinonen, age 57, of Arlington Heights was struck as she crossed Grove Street in the crosswalk at Kaspar Avenue. Mrs. Leinonen succumbed to her injuries sustained in the traffic crash and
passed away at Lutheran General Hospital, in Park Ridge, Illinois on March 11, 2015.
The initial court date is scheduled for April 28, 2015 at the Cook County 3rd District Courthouse 2121 Euclid Avenue, Rolling Meadows at 10:30 a.m. in Room #104.
