Rosemont police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:01 p.m. to a report of a shooting victim on Scott Street near Granville Street. One person was shot, and one or more other people were injured, in the reported shooting incident that occurred about 11:57 a.m. A car crash nearby was somehow connected to the sequence of events leading to the shooting.

Rosemont Village spokesman Gary Mack released the identity of the victim as Joseph Caffarrello, age 31, of Rosemont. Caffarrello, of the 9800 block of Norwood in Rosemont (about four blocks from the crime scene) was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:45 p.m. The identity of the police officer, who was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge has not been released.

Two Rosemont rescue ambulances responded and a rescue ambulance from Des Plaines Fire Department and Park Ridge Fire Department responded. A staging area for the ambulances was set at the guard shack for the gated community at Scott Street and Higgins Road. The Park Ridge Fire Department ambulance returned with no patient. The status of the Des Plaines ambulance at the incident was unknown.

A Rosemont fire ladder truck blocked traffic in the neighborhood near the house where the shooting was reported — also possibly near the crash location.

Rosemont Elementary School in Rosemont was placed on a soft lockdown. A senior center nearby was also placed in lockdown Wednesday afternoon.

The Chicago Sun-Times has reported on Caffarrello before. Caffarrello — a former Illinois Tollway garage supervisor — was captured sleeping in an office chair on the job with the Illinois Tollway. A fellow employee captured the the image of Caffarrello sleeping in 2013. Caffarrello was fired multiple time, but was re-hired twice by the Illinois Tollway. While Caffarrello was never accused of crimes related to mob ties, public records show that his uncle was Anthony “Jeep” Daddino the late street tax collector (a collector of extortion payments from businesses). “Jeep” Daddino was also a Rosemont building inspector in the 1980s. While on the Illinois Tollway job, Caffarrello allegedly threatened people by reminding employees of his mob connection. He was married to the daughter of the clerk of the Village of Rosemont.

The murder Friday night of a 14-year-old in an apartment complex northwest of the Allstate Arena is not believed to connected to today’s death. Illinois State Police are investigating the police-involved shooting.
