Facebook and Instagram networks were not accessible late Monday night and very early Tuesday morning.
The outage come on a night when many people probably expected to be sharing images of the blizzard affecting the northeast region of the United States.
It is unknown if high traffic in the Northeast might have indirectly brought down the social media network. Instagram showed a “5xx Server Error” at 1:00 am. CST.

Facebook claims the outage was the result of a change that was introduced to their system that affected configuration systems. Facebook officials report the outage was not caused by a cyberattack.
The website isitdownrightnow.com also slowed down to a crawl as many people attempted to check on the status of Facebook.
The website Outage Analyzer reported an outage that lasted up to 4h :05m :13s from 12:39 a.m. until 4:44 a.m. CT.
Outage analyzer listed the “Probable Cause” as follows
37.15% – Fault with security on Host at https://www.facebook.com
34.94% – Probable application fault for https://www.facebook.com on Host 173.252.120.6
27.89% – Probable application fault for https://www.facebook.com
In Chicagoland, Facebook was operating again at 1:09 p.m. CT.
