Three teenage girls trick-or-treating in Halloween costumes were killed by a hit-and-run driver at a Southern California intersection Friday night. Authorities said the girls were in a crosswalk in Santa Ana when an SUV hit them.
Three 13-year-old girls, two of them twins, were killed about 6:45 p.m. Halloween Friday by a driver traveling at a high rate of speed in a Honda SUV at Old Grand Street and Fairhaven Avenue in Santa Ana, California.
All three girls were dead at the scene, where their bodies remained for investigation under tents and behind tarps. About 200 people gathered at the scene in disbelief.
The suspected offending vehicle with front-end damage was found behind a Big Lots department store less than 1,000 feet away. Witnesses followed the vehicle after the girls were hit, but were unable to track the suspects that fled on foot after they got out of the SUV.
Orange County Fire Authority firefighter/paramedics, Care Ambulance Service paramedics, and Santa Ana police officers responded to the trauma emergency and crime scene. The crime scene was reported to include a wide perimeter and area.
