Jane Margaret Burke-Byrne has died November 14, 2014 at age 80. The former Mayor of Chicago served in office from April 16, 1979 to April 29, 1983. She is the first and to-date only female mayor of Chicago which is in 2014 holds the distinction of the largest city in the United States to have a female mayor.

Kathy Byrne, the former Mayor Byrnes’s daughter, confirmed that her mother died about 10 a.m. Friday with her family by her side.

Jane Byrne first entered politics to help John F. Kennedy get elected president in 1960. She met Mayor Richard J. Daley during her work on Kennedy’s campaign.
