The Lockheed Martin-led industry team launched the nation’s seventh Littoral Combat Ship into the Menominee River on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014. The future LCS Detroit was formally christened prior to her launch by Mrs. Barbara Levin.
The U.S. Navy has christened the USS Detroit (LCS-7) on Saturday afternoon on the Menominee River at the Marinette Marin Corporation shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin. Delivery to the US Navy is scheduled for 2015 at its home port in San Diego.
The ship’s sponsor, U.S. Sen. Carl Levin’s wife, Barbara, broke a bottle of champagne across the bow to formally christen the future USS Detroit.
USS Detroit (LCS-7) is a littoral combat ship (LCS) is a class of relatively small surface vessels intended for operations in the littoral zone (close to shore) by the United States Navy. The ship is envisioned to be a networked, agile, stealthy surface combatant capable of defeating anti-access and asymmetric threats in the in close to shore combat zones. The ship can operate water less than 20 feet deep.
The LCS ship design adds the capabilities of a small assault transport with a flight deck and hangar large enough to base two SH-60B/F or MH-60R/S Seahawk helicopters. The ships also have the capability to recover and launch small boats from a stern ramp, and enough cargo volume and payload to deliver a small assault force with fighting vehicles to a roll-on/roll-off port facility.
