10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman.
A woman, Shoshana B. Roberts, says she deliberately used non-verbal cues to express she was not open to communication while walking down New York City street. The interaction with the people she passed was captured on video, which showed she received numerous cat calls.
The YouTube video received over 15.5 million views in less than two days. The video page links to a donation site that claims it is seeking funding to work to end street harassment.
The video created by Rob Bliss Creative used a camera operator walking with a backpack that aimed the camera out the back of the backpack while the operator walking in the same direction in front of Shoshana B. Roberts. The microphones she carried looked like hand weights.
One person walked silently at the women’s side for five minutes. The experience caused Robert to be afraid, but she focused on the mission to reveal the type of harassment she and other women face daily.
