Bolingbrook teen accused of trying to join ISIS.
Mohammed Hamzah Khan, age 19-year-old and a U.S. citizen from Bolingbrook, Illinois, appeared in court Monday, October 6, 2014 to face charges for allegedly attempting to provide material support for a terrorist organization.
Federal authorities said Khan was arrested Saturday at Chicago’s O’Hare airport by members of the FBI’s Chicago Join Terrorism Task Force. In court on Monday, October 6, 2014 authorities revealed he had purchased a ticket to Istanbul, via Vienna, and alleged he planned to travel across the Turkish border to Syria or Iraq.
Mohammed Hamzah Khan’s parents, who were present in court, declined to comment on the case.
U.S. security officials have estimated that about 100 Americans have already traveled to the Middle East to participate with militant groups — including ISIS — in the conflict in Syria and Iraq.
If convicted of providing provide material support for a terrorist organization, Khan could face up to 15 years in prison.
