UPDATE: Arlington Heights Fire Department ambulance recovered with offender in custody just south of Rantoul, Illinois near Champaign, Illinois. The vehicle was stopped with one or two front tires blown. Otherwise there is apparently no known damage to the vehicle. The ambulance was a reserve ambulance, a half white and half red older model. The reserve ambulance was being used for front line service at the time it was stolen.
The female is in custody with the Rantoul Police Department, and is believed to be a known local of Arlington Heights — possibly a homeless person.

Arlington Heights police responded about 4:14 AM Friday to a report of a stolen ambulance from Northwest Community Hospital, 800 West Central Road Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that Arlington Heights Fire Department Ambulance 4 was stolen from the emergency room bay of Northwest Community Hospital. The ambulance is described as a red ambulance.

The front line ambulance, which is all red with a white stripe, is a Harvester Type I ambulance valued at about $220,000. The front line ambulance was not being used at the time of the crime.
The offender was described as a female driver.
The crime is reported to have occurred just before 4:13 a.m.
There were sightings of the ambulance on Interstate 90 eastbound near Arlington Heights Road at about 4:30 a.m.
The ambulance was sighted on eastbound I-90 near I-294 at about 4:36 a.m.
The ambulance was sighted on eastbound I-90 near Harlem at about 4:41 a.m. At this time the ambulance was traveling about 70 mph and was driven with all lights off.
The ambulance was sighted entering the Dan Ryan Expressway at 35th Street at 4:51 a.m.
The ambulance was sighted northbound on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 33rd Street at 4:51 a.m.
The ambulance was sighted southbound on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 87th Street at 4:57 a.m.
The ambulance was sighted southbound on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 147th Street at 5:03 a.m.
The ambulance was sighted southbound on I-57 at US 30 at 5:09 a.m.
The ambulance was sighted southbound on I-57 at Sauk Trail at 5:10
a.m.
The ambulance was stopped and suspect driver arrested by Rantoul police at 6:15 a.m.
