Michael G. Platt, 35, of 235 W. Wilson Street, Palatine, was arrested today after Cook County prosecutors upgraded the charge of aggravated battery to first-degree murder within 24 hours after the victim he allegedly punched ten days ago died at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Police arrested Platt at his girlfriend’s house minutes after the new warrant was issued.

Palatine resident Ryan Flannigan, who was injured during a fight or attack outside a bar in Palatine on Friday, July 18, 2014, died Monday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital just before 4:00 PM — 10 days after being injured.

Michael G. Platt, 35, of 235 W. Wilson Street, Palatine, was arrested at a bar in downtown Palatine about 30 minutes after he allegedly attacked a man Friday night near another bar — Pops Bar and Grill, 19 North Bothwell Street.

Platt is accused of punching 26-year-old Palatine resident, Ryan Flannigan outside Pops Bar and Grill, where Flannigan was found unconscious and bleeding on the sidewalk. Apparently Platt went to another bar where police were able to find him from detailed descriptions reported by witnesses. Apparently at least one witness saw the suspect punch the victim in the side of the face during an argument, and saw the victim fall backward and hit his head on the sidewalk.

Police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:32 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2014 to the report of the injured, unconscious man on the sidewalk and police and firefighter/paramedics found Flannigan lying on the ground, bleeding from the head. Firefighter/paramedics immediately transported the victim to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital — within about ten minutes after arriving on the scene.

Ryan Flanigan remained in critical condition at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, and was unable to give any statements about the incident up to his death.

Friday night, police immediately went to work to search for the suspect, and found Platt at the second bar. Later Platt was charged with felony aggravated battery. This afternoon that charged was upgraded to First-Degree Murder with bond set at $2 million. His next scheduled court date has not yet been confirmed.

A Cook County judge had set bail for Michael G. Platt at $75,000 Monday July 21, 2014 and he was released later that day after posting a bond of 10 percent. Platt had been scheduled for a court date 10:30 a.m. August 14, 2014 in the Cook County circuit court branch in Rolling Meadows.
