Elgin cab driver Melba R. Farr, age 48, was killed early Sunday morning when the taxi sedan she was operating was rear-ended on Interstate 90 near Sears Centre. The cab may have been at a standstill or may have been backing up when it was rear-ended by a GMC Arcadia. Farr remained in the cab when the vehicle became fully involved with fire. The driver of the GMC Arcadia was treated at the scene and released.
Illinois State police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:09 AM Sunday to crash with a vehicle fire westbound I-90 east of Beverly Road Hoffman Estates, IL. Initially, police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a vehicle — possibly involved in a crash was on fire on westbound I-90 east of Beverly Road.
Firefighters on the scene reported one vehicle at the center median, and one vehicle fully-involved with fire.
Initially a fire engine, battalion chief and ambulance responded to the scene. A squad and engine were then moved up to the scene. The second engine was need after the first engine emptied their water tank.
One person was reported killed at the scene.
All four westbound lanes of four lanes and both shoulders were blocked early this morning. Westbound traffic was being diverted of tollway at New Sutton Road.
