Secretary of State John Kerry says ISIL is not fighting for the Sunni’s, but says that ISIL is fighting for the division of Iraq.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has agreed to a July 1 deadline to begin the process to form a new government — a requirement for U.S. assistance in the proposed fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Secretary of State John Kerry arrived unannounced in Baghdad, and also arrived in Cairo Sunday for a surprise visit and conference with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi.
ISIS militants advanced toward Baghdad over the weekend from the north and the west with at least 70% of Anbar province believed to be under the control of ISIS.
Today Iraqi troops are attempting to recapture the Tal Afar airbase in northern Iraq. At least 1,000 Iraqi troops have amassed to the north of Tal Afar and are firing rockets at militants controlling the city.
ISIS fighters also seized the western Anbar town of Rutba, 70 miles from the borders of Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
Raouf Abdul Rahman, the judge who sentenced Saddam Hussein to death by hanging in 2006 was reportedly captured on June 16, 2014 and killed by ISIS militants two days later.
Debka.com reports that the Jordanian Air Force bombed an Al Qaida-Iraq incursion as the ISIS militants crossed the Turaibil border. The article shows a photo of an ISIS patrol crew on a yellow Ford pickup truck, and also reports that ISIS is also standing at the Saudi Arabia border.
