Chicagoland weather radar [LIVE PRECIPITATION INDICATOR RADAR] shows a large area of showers and thunderstorms with embedded potential for severe thunderstorm cells approaching Rockford and St. Charles area at about 7:20 a.m.
The wide area potential is about .38 inch by midnight (.54 inch by midnight in St. Charles) with heavier rain in severe thunderstorm cells up to two or three inches of rain possible. Another night of severe lightning is also possible.
There is a second band of thunderstorms near Des Moines, Iowa that is expected to be in Illinois in early morning hours of Friday.
Satellite images show all of northern Illinois under thick clouds and almost all of Iowa under thick clouds.
The Severe Storm Prediction center does not indicate and increase tornado potential for are area; however the National Weather Service indicates the possibility of heavy rainful, isolated flash flooding, gusty winds to 45 MPH, and small hail.
