A organized group of masked, armed “pro-Russian” men seized control of a police station in eastern Ukraine while gunfire was exchanged Saturday, April 12, 2014.
The group, who possibly represent a larger population or are actual Russian soldiers, are aligned with a portion of the Ukrainian population that is demanding a referendum on autonomy from Ukraine and/or annexation by Russia. The group also attempted to arrest a member of a local city council.
Armed militants with Russian weapons also seized government buildings in the Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine, including police headquarters in Donetsk (southwest of Luhansk) and Kramatorsk.
