After two months of medical treatment and rehabilitation, Alyssa Jo Lommel is home. The 19-year-old woman’s life was saved by passers by and medical teams, but unfortunately she lost all her fingers and most of her feet from severe frostbite and tissue damage.

Alyssa Jo Lommel, a sophomore at University of Minnesota – Duluth, was in ‘stable critical’ condition immediately after spending nine hours passed out on a neighbor’s porch following a night of drinking. Air temperature at the campus in Duluth, Minnesota on Saturday, December 7, 2013 reached as low as -18 degrees with a wind chill of -36 early Saturday morning.

A 19-year-old college student was in critical condition after being found unconscious and suffering from hypothermia on the porch of a Duluth home in December. Alyssa Jo Lommel was found unconscious without gloves in subzero weather after spending the night outside in subzero temperatures.

The college student was found by a passerby Saturday morning suffering from hypothermia, and with severe frostbite. Alyssa Jo Lommel’s hands were swollen about three times their normal size with damaged tissue and split skin from her palms to her fingertips.

Physicians were working on restoring optimal circulation to her damaged hands and feet to avoid the need for amputation, but unfortunately all her fingers had to be amputated, and much of both feet were also amputated.

About 11pm after a night of underage drinking with friend, the Alyssa Jo Lommel was picked up by her friends, who drove her home and dropped her off outside her front door at 810 Woodland Avenue. Her friends left without waiting for her to go inside her residence.

Footprints at the scene show that the college student may have sought shelter in an unheated garage, but then returned to the porch.
