Chicago police and fire department paramedics responded about 10:00 a.m.Friday, March 7, 2014 to a report of a gunshot victim at the Unique Thrift Store, 9341 South Ashland Avenue in Chicago.
A woman working at the thrift store in the Washington Heights neighborhood was hit by a bullet after a co-worker shook a sock from a pile of donated clothing, and a gun discharged after it fell from the sock and hit the floor (or fell in the co-worker’s hand).
Maria Carmen Dominguez, age 54, was accidentally shot in the chest while she was working inside the Unique Thrift Store. Maria Carmen Dominguez and another co-worker were sorting through clothing in a back room when a co-worker shook picked up the sock from the sorting pile. The gun fell out onto the floor, which triggered a shot to randomly discharge from the gun. Another report indicates the gun discharged while fell into the co-worker’s hand.
Chicago police (Area South) and U.S. Department of Labor agents are investigating the death.
Maria Carmen Dominquez was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Christ Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
