Winter Storm Heads Up Eastern Seaboard from the Southeast

Atlanta drivers stayed home, but many in North Carolina didn’t and wound up stuck in an icy traffic jam.

Heavy snow with some parts of Alabama reporting 10 inches of snow. Heavy snow in Charlotte, North Carolina caused the Fellowship Hall of University Hills Baptist Church in University City to collapse. No injuries were reported. Traffic jams like those seen in Atlanta last week occurred yesterday in North Carolina.

The winter storm that brought heavy snows and significant ice accumulations to portions of the Southeast on Wednesday and Thursday will begin its track up the Eastern Seaboard on Thursday and Friday. An abundance of Atlantic moisture getting wrapped into the storm will continue to fuel widespread precipitation. A wide swath of heavy snow accumulations are expected with this storm, but air off the warmer ocean water should change snow over to rain along the coastal areas.

A narrow axis of sleet and freezing rain will be possible within the transition zone…which is expected to set up near the I-95 corridor. Heavy snow is headed for New York, where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 6:00 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2014 for New York City. Up to 12 inches of snow are forecast for New York City.

Birmingham, Alabama recorded 3 inches of snow on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.

In Birmingham, Alabama a Winter Weather Advisory and a Civil Emergency Message was in effect until 6:00 a.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014.
