Severe Arcing, Explosions at Com Ed Substation Near High Tension Lines, Oakton St And Bonnie Ln, Elk Grove Village

Elk Grove Village police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:45 PM Sunday to multiple reports of sever electrical arcing near high-tension lines at Oakton Street and Bonnie Lane, Elk Grove Village, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report from firefighters at Elk Grove Village Fire Station 8 that severe arcing was occurring across the street from the fire station at Oakton Street and Bonnie Lane.
Firefighters soon realized that the Com Ed substation was arcing — possibly at a feeder line to the high-tension lines above.

Several people also called in reports of the arcing, and were concerned about their safety in apartments just southwest of the Com Ed substation where there was arcing and electrical explosions. Police reported no power lines were down and the hazard was confined to the Com Ed facility near Oakton Street and Bonnie Lane.

The arcing continued non-stop until about 7:38 p.m. when there was a final explosion.

A few power fluctuations occurred at about 6:45 p.m. at the beginning of the incident, and a few activated burglar and/or fire alarms occurred at about 6:45 p.m. There are no known power outages active in Elk Grove Village as of 8:25 p.m. Com Ed expected to be working on the substation through the night.

Firefighters left the scene about 8:30 p.m. with Com Ed on the scene. Com Ed was already aware of the incident via remote monitoring of the substation.

Several people stopped their vehicles to watch the arcing.
