UPDATE 2014: A semi-trailer truck apparently crashed into an IDOT HELP truck and an Illinois State Police vehicle, causing a fire in the crashed vehicles, the death of the tollway worker, critical injuries to an Illinois State Police trooper, and lesser injuries to at least one other motorist.

Illinois State Police responded about 9:20 p.m. Monday to a report of an Illinois State Police trooper hit and a HELP truck hit by another vehicle. A heavy-duty tow truck driver already working to assist a broken down semi-trailer truck called 9-1-1 to report the truck. Some or all of the vehicles were involved with fire after the collision. The HELP truck was pushed into the back of a semi-trailer truck. The trooper and the maintenance worker involved were possibly assisting a semi-trailer truck driver on a motorist assist incident. The HELP truck was pushed into the back of the semi-trailer truck and a large steel coil was ejected from a truck onto the middle of eastbound I-88. Five vehicles, including two semi-trailer trucks were involved in the crash.
An Illinois Tollway HELP truck maintenance worker was killed in the crash.
An Illinois State Police trooper was transported with serious injuries to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. A truck driver involved in the crash was reported to be injured, but walking.
Aurora Fire Department remained on the scene past 10:08 p.m. when firefighters were working on extinguishment of vehicle fires.

Eastbound I-88 was blocked at Eola Road with a detour set up by Illinois State Police. Eastbound traffic west of Farnsworth Road was forced to exit at Farnsworth. The tollway is expected to be closed for an extended period. Police and rescue workers needed to rotate into vehicles for warming. Air temperature in Aurora, Illinois at 9:52 p.m. was -9 degrees with a wind chill of -30.
