CCTV capture of Volgograd railway station suicide bombing.
A nine-year-old child is among the people injured by suspected suicide attack, local government reported. It cited an updated casualties report, saying the bombing killed at least 16 people and injured some 27 others.
A Volgograd policeman was killed when he shielded people from a suicide bomber’s deadly blast at the city’s train station. The officer was approaching the female suicide bomber, who then detonated the bomb.
The terrorist attack occurred in Volgograd, a city in South Russia on Sunday. Twenty-seven people were transported to a hospital. Eight of the victims were in critical condition.
Police officer Dmitry Makovkin, age 29, approached the female bomber as she suddenly to rush inside the train station. Dmitry crossed her path and it seems he covered her with his body. The terrorist then blew herself up, instantly killing Makovkin and injuring three other police officers.
A mother was also killed while shielding her 9-year-old daughter when the bomb exploded. The nine-old was injured, and is in critical condition.
Volgograd was known as Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961, and Tsaritsyn from 1589 to 1925.
Under Stalin, the city became a center of heavy industry and transshipment by rail and river. Stalingrad was attacked by Germany and Axis forces during World War II, and in 1942, the city became the site of one of the pivotal battles of World War II. The Battle of Stalingrad had perhaps the greatest casualty figures of any single battle in the history of warfare (estimates are between 1,250,000 and 1,798,619). The control of the central railway station of “Stalingrad” changed hands thirteen times during the Battle of Stalingrad.
