Each year, Competitor magazine and Running Insight trade magazine identify the “50 Best Running Stores in America.” the winners were announced this month.
Running stores that were ranked among the 50 Best Running Stores in America were the ones that offer exemplary customer services for every type of runner, organize training programs, group runs and local races, and provide knowledge and insights about the latest trends, the newest gear, proper running form and local trails.
The ranking research also looks for stores that can answer endless questions about racing, training and injury prevention.
Six Illinois running stores made the top and one Illinois store made the top four.

Naperville Running Club was named the 2013 Running Store of the year by Competitor magazine and running industry trade publication Running Insight for its exemplary customer service, invigorating training programs and group runs, strong credit ratings from vendors and community commitment to local races, schools and charity organizations.
Naperville Running Company made the top four with Red Coyote Running and Fitness (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), Rush Running Company (Bentonville, Arkansas), and Sole Sports Running Zone (Tempe, Arizona), then Friday they learned they were voted the #1 store in America for 2013. The Naperville Running Company was also named the country’s top shop in 2009. The year 2013 for “NRC” marked the sixth consecutive time Naperville Running Co. made the list of the 50 Best Running Stores in America
At Naperville Running Company, the primary owner Kris Hartner Hartner has a degree in biomechanics, and worked in various roles at Reebok and Adidas before opening Naperville Running Company in 2000.
The store enjoys a large population of runner of all types in the neighborhood, and serves them well. The community also has top-tier high school cross country teams and one of the country’s best NCAA Division III programs nearby.
