CNY Students Continue with protests as students Tafadar Sourov and Khalil Vasquez face a disciplinary hearing for alleged involvement protests following the of the Morales Shakur Community Center at City College.
The City College of New York was the scene of protest and significant police presence Friday as two student leaders were brought before a hearing committee after they were suspended.
On October 20, CCNY security abruptly seized and shut down the Guillermo Morales/Assata Shakur Community and Student Center (“Morales/Shakur Center”) at CCNY to prevent student and community access.
Many student protesters believe the university closed the The Guillermo Morales/Assata Shakur Community and Student Center in response to allegations that the center was being used as an organizing space for the protests that took place against former CIA director David Petraeus, who was offered a $200,000 teaching job at the City University.
The students, members of the Maoist student group Revolutionary Student Coordinating Committee, were thrown off campus for their role in organizing protests against the closure of the Morales-Shakur Center, a leftist organizing space established in 1989.
Petraeus was named a visiting professor at Macaulay Honors College at the City University of New York in July 2013. After word spread of his $200,000 salary for the academic year and critics denounced the salary and protesters hit the streets, Petraeus agreed to take on the teaching position for just $1 in order to keep the focus on the students and away from any monetary controversy.[191] In September 2013 Petraeus was harassed by students at CUNY while walking on campus
