Overhaul and cleanup after a small attic fire was extinguished. The fire was caused by a lightning strike at a condominium/townhouse on Partridge Court.
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:00 PM Sunday to a report of an odor of something burning in the block of 1600 Partridge Court Arlington Heights, IL. While police and firefighter/paramedics were en route, they received an updated report that the homeowners now saw a light haze in a second floor room in the condominium/townhouse.
Firefighters arrived and found no smoke showing from the outside. Inside firefighters reported a haze of smoke and immediately checked the unit to the north of resident that reported the smoke odor. A smoke detector went off, but the smoke cleared. Firefighters initially found no smoke in the attic space. Then firefighters reported some smoke showing from the outside. A fire was discovered in the ridge line of the roof. Firefighters on the roof poked a hole in the roof, and were able to instruct firefighters inside exactly where the fire was located. Firefighters then immediately pulled down the ceiling to expose a small attic fire with heavy smoke in the attic. Crews that had used ground ladders to access the roof and discovered a small hole indicating a lightning strike had occurred. The truck crew opened another small hole in the roof to ventilate smoke and hot gases out of the attic. The fire was contained to a very small area of the attic. An engine crew had the fire extinguished within 10 minutes. Firefighters also thoroughly checked the attic and the rest of the building for extension. No extension of fire was found.
Firefighters from Buffalo Grove and Palatine responded auto-aid to the report of the house fire. Most crews left the scene by 10:00 p.m.
There were no reports of any injuries.
