Candy Crowley talks to Ernie Banks about his 19 years with the Chicago Cubs, and his recent honor from the White House.

Ernie Banks talks with CNN’s Candy Crowley about receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom and some of his experiences as a baseball player. Mr. Cub says his long range goal was to win the Nobel Peace Price with Oprah Winfrey.

Banks will be the ninth baseball player to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom award.

Ernie Banks played 19 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, and holds the most home runs in a season by a shortstop. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a first basemen on August 8, 1977.

Ernie Banks broke a record of five grand slams in 1955, and was MVP in 1958 and 1959. Ernie Banks filled in as manager for the remainder of a game when Cubs manager Whitey Lockman was ejected in the 11th inning of a game against the San Diego Padres. The Cubs won the game 3-2 in 12 innings. The temporary assignment makes Ernie Banks the MLB’s first black manager — ahead of Frank Robinson by almost two years.

His best advice to players? Relax, don’t force it, just let it happen.
