Suspect Shot During Theft/Robbery at Oakbrook Center at Kingery Highway and 22nd St, Oak Brook

Oak Brook police and firefighter/paramedics responded to a shooting and report of an active shooter at Oakbrook Center (“Oakbrook Mall”) about 3:41 p.m. Sunday. Police immediately learned that a security shot a suspect involved in a theft or robbery that occurred at the CD Peacock Jewelry store at Oakbrook Center a mall in Oak Brook Sunday afternoon. The mall was placed on lockdown immediately after the report of the shooting and active shooter, but the lockdown order was released after the shooting situation was clarified.

Three suspects walked into the CD Peacock Jewelry store at Oakbrook Center when one carrying a sledgehammer shattered the top glass of a jewelry display at about 3:41 p.m. The suspect that smashed the display case was shot in the abdomen by a store security guard, and was collapsed on the floor after the shooting. The suspect, carrying a 4-pound hand sledge hammer which had been tucked in his waistband allegedly approached the store security guard after he was ordered by the security guard to drop the sledge hammer. The suspect shot by the guard was taken to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he underwent surgery for a single gunshot wound in the abdomen. The shot suspect is under police guard.

Two other suspects, which had been in “lookout” positions at the jewelry store, fled in a black Jeep Liberty which was stolen from the shopping center parking lot near Neiman Marcus. The Jeep Liberty was possibly owned by a shopping center employee. The Jeep Liberty, backed-in by the offenders, was positioned in a handicapped-marked parking space, and was seen heading westbound on 22nd Street, apparently with the suspects inside, after the shooting.

Regarding the two suspects at large, one of the suspect’s was described as a male/black, 20-30 years-old, with a skinny build (5’11” 160 LBS), with a “heavy beard” wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. The second suspect was described as a male/black with a heavy build (5’9″ 230 LBS) with a tattoo on the right side of his neck, wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

Surveillance shows the suspects were at the mall for a couple of hours before they tried to rob the jewelry store.

There were 10 customers and six employees in the store at the time of theft/robbery attempt and shooting.

Oakbrook Center is an open air, upscale shopping center with over 2,000,000 square feet of retail floor space.

C.D. Peacock is also located at Northbrook Court, Old Orchard and Woodfield Mall in Chicagoland.
