Marijuana Vending Machines, Pot Brownie Included at Medbox.
Bruce Bedrick, a 44-year-old chiropractor and occasional pot user is chief executive officer of Medbox (MDBX), maker of one of the world’s first marijuana vending machines. “We are planning to literally dominate the industry.”
Medbox’s main product resembles a Redbox DVD dispenser that you see in front of Jewel-Osco or Dominick’s. The Medbox is black, refrigerated, and armored, and sits behind sales counters at state-licensed marijuana dispensaries — not in front of the local grocery store.
Biometric technology identifies patients’ fingerprints while they carry state-issued medical marijuana cards. Clerks hand over plastic vials of cannabis leaf, cannabis-infused brownies, lozenges, or other “medibles.”
Medbox, based in West Hollywood, Calif., saw its market cap soar to more than $2 billion in November after approval of legalized Cannabis in Colorado and Washington. California has both medical and decriminalization laws for Cannabis.
“The U.S. Department of Justice will retain jurisdiction over the enforcement of existing federal statutes criminalizing the use of controlled substances, including marijuana. Any state laws to the contrary are of no legal effect.
No state, no executive can nullify a statute that has been passed by Congress.”
— Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy at National Press Club luncheon April 2013
The federal government still has the last word.
