Eastbound Northwest Highway construction sign, alerting motorists of road construction beginning May 3, 2013.
Construction begins next week on a project that consists of widening and resurfacing on Northwest Highway (US 14) from Arthur Avenue to Waterman Avenue with Grade Crossing improvements at the Union Pacific Railroad, traffic signal modifications at US 14 and Arthur Avenue and resurfacing of Arthur Avenue and Davis Street, located in the Village of Arlington Heights.
Improving traffic safety at the railroad crossing at Arthur Avenue and Northwest Highway as well as at the Prindle Avenue underpass was the impetus behind a $5 million roadway project that is now under way after 13 years of planning, design, and negotiating with State, Federal and Union Pacific authorities.
One of the first steps in the road construction project, which is 80 percent federally funded, is to temporarily close the railroad crossing at Northwest Highway and Arthur Avenue on Tuesday, May 21. Motorists will be re-routed to the railroad crossing at Arlington Heights Road and Northwest Highway until the Arthur Avenue crossing upgrades are completed.
The cost of this long-awaited roadway improvement project is split between $4 million from Federal sources and $1 million of Village funding.
