The pope is the Bishop of Rome and the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church. In the Catholic Church, the Pope is regarded as the successor of Saint Peter, the Apostle. The current pope is Francis I, who was elected on March 13 2013 to succeed retiring Pope Benedict XVI, who reigned from 2005 to 2013.
The office of the pope is known as the papacy with an ecclesiastical jurisdiction known as the “Holy See”.
