A paramedic on the scene of several crashes of the Route 7 Bridge in Delaware Park was seriously injured when he fell while trying to jump across the gap between the northbound and southbound divide. He fell about 50 feet into the creek bed below at about 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Police report that a driver in a van traveling southbound witnessed a car vs. guardrail crash and stopped to assist. The van was then rear-ended by an SUV. Three people were injured in the crash.

The circumstances involving the paramedic’s jump over the divide are not known.

Almost one year ago, in darkness after 6:30 p.m. on February 8, 2012, Alexandria (Virginia) paramedic Joshua Weissman was at work responding to a car fire. In rain, smoke and poor visibility of flashing emergency lights, he jumped over the guardrail and fell through a gap between roadways on the I-395 overpass into Four Mile Run Creek — about 20-30 feet below the interstate. Colleagues rescued him from rocks and water below and started CPR. Weissman died the following day.
