A difficult end to an amazing race. Kyle Larson gets airborne with several cars piling up behind. Tony Stewart found his way to victory lane.
A multi-car crash occurred near the end of the Nationwide Series Drive4COPD 300 race on the same Daytona, Florida track where the Daytona 500 will be held on Sunday.
Driver Kyle Larson’s car (#32) ended up going airborne and flying into a fence that separates the track from spectators. Number 32 broke into pieces — including tires and a fiery engine, and was seen stopped and then towed with no front end. Larson climbed out of the car himself, and was able to walk away from his vehicle.
Several spectator were hit by flying debris and were seen down in the grandstand. A wheel rested in a seat. The #32 car’s engine was lodged in a protective grandstand fence, and dislodged and removed with a forklift.
In the multi-casualty situation, at least 10 ambulances lined up on the track. Victims were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center and Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. At least 28 people are reported injured. 14 fans were treated on site, and 14 fans were taken to local hospitals. A child was also reported injured.
