Arlington Heights police received a report that a subject received an email from a friend’s email account which was compromised by an unknown offender. The email stated the friend’s family was in the Manila Philippines and was attacked by robbers who took all their cash, credit cards and cell phones. The offender(s) were pretending to be the victim asking for $1,650 to be sent so they could make it home. The subject who received the email knew it was a scam and contacted their friend.
This is a common scam. You should always contact your friends or family before taking any action. The email in this scam was obviously a fraud because of the very poor spelling and grammar. There will usually be obvious signs.
Anyone with information about this or any other serious crime in Arlington Heights should submit an anonymous text tip by texting the keyword 847AHPD and your message to 847411(tip411) or call Arlington Heights Crime Stoppers at (847) 590-STOP.
