A senior resident received a telephone call from an unknown offender who told her shhad won a Mercedes and $2.5 million dollars. The same resident also received a call from an alleged FBI Agent instructing her to go to Walgreen’s, purchase a Green Dot Money Card, load it with $499 and notify mail it to Maribor, FL. [Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia. There is a Miami, Florida company known as Maribor Holdings.]
A second potential victim received a phishing phone call asking for her Medicare Identification Number (SSN) which she refused to give.
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS POLICE DEPARTMENT REMINDER:
1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
2. Keep personal information private – never give your bank account, social security or credit card numbers to anyone you don’t know.
3. Avoid high pressure sales – Say NO to any offer or deal which is only available right now.
4. Never pay for a prize – If you are offered a prize but have to pay a processing fee or taxes in advance it is likely a scam.
REMEMBER – Scammers are clever and will change their stories often.
