VIDEO surveillance at the home of Al Alverson showing delivery of packages and theft of an Apple iPad gift for his daughter in Harris County, northwest of Houston, Texas.
A surveillance video allegedly shows a UPS driver stealing a package from a northwest Harris County front porch shortly after it was delivered by Fed Ex. Alverson received notification from Fed Ex that the Apple iPad was delivered at 9:29 a.m.
The video reports that at 9:45 a.m. a FedEx employee delivered an Apple iPad, with delivery committed with a required pre-signed delivery form that accepts an agreement that FedEx can leave the package at the front door. The FedEx delivery man leaves the package after removing and reading the pre-signed delivery form.
At 1:51 p.m. a UPS employee rang the doorbell and waited approximately two minutes. The video reports the “UPS guy” returns and takes the package previously delivered by UPS. The video shows the man, dressed in brown, examining the package and then removing the package from the porch. Earlier, while the “UPS guy” is delivering his package, the video shows the man glancing at the package left by FedEx.
Initially, Alverson contacted UPS, but was not satisfied with their response. Next, he posted the surveillance video on YouTube.
After Al Alverson posted the video on YouTube Wednesday night, a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy and an investigator from UPS responded to Alverson’s house. UPS tracked down the driver, who is reported to have been a seasonal employee. By the Thursday afternoon, the Apple iPad was returned to its rightful owner. No charges were pressed after the suspect was arrested and charged with theft by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Of course, the seasonal employee was fired.
According to UPS, Thursday, December 20, 2012 is usually the busiest day of the holiday season with about 28 million packages delivered on that day. UPS Drivers deliver more than 300 packages per second on December 20. Also, UPS operates 400 additional flights per day on the week prior to Christmas Day.
We can expect crime from all types of offenders will increase at the front porch with UPS reporting a Cyber Monday sales increase of 30 percent in 2012 — quoting an IBM Digital Analytics benchmark. Also according to the benchmark, sales from mobile devices accounted for 13% of Cyber Monday sales — up 96% from 2011.
Surveillance videos with offensive moves by both UPS and FedEx delivery people are becoming popular on YouTube — usually showing packages tossed over fences with disregard for the careful handling of the packages.
Harris County is the most populated county in Texas and the third most populated county in the United States with about 4.1 million people. The largest city in Harris County is Houston.
Harris County operates the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, which serves unincorporated areas and supplements police forces of incorporated areas. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office, founded in 1837, is the largest sheriff’s office in Texas and the third largest in the United States with about 4,000 employees.
