Long Island Expressway Pileup Shuts Down Long Island Expressway.
A tractor-trailer crashed into several vehicles on Wednesday about 2:40 p.m. about 70 miles east of New York City on Wednesday on the eastbound Long Island Expressway (I-495), causing a series of crashes that killed a woman, injured 33 people, and damaged nearly three dozen vehicles along several hundred yards.
Three vehicles caught on fire. One of the burning vehicles was a semi-trailer truck carrying debris from Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy. One vehicle that burned with the semi-trailer truck was burned to the point that the make and model could not immediately be determined.
Christa Zepf, 68, of Blue Point was killed while driving a Toyota Camry.
Five fire departments and 19 Emergency Medical Services agencies responded to the scene.
Long Island Expressway (Interstate 495) “LIE” was closed eastbound from Exits 68-69 including the service road and westbound from Exits 68-67. The expressway reopned about 6:00 a.m. Thursday.
