FULL UNEDITED VIDEO from 2010 …

A light snow, green awnings with a fresh covering of snow, and an army of Santas in red Santa suits marching East to the starting line of the 3rd Annual Rotary 5K Santa Run made a magical location out of Campbell Street and Vail Avenue on a Saturday morning in 2010.

Official starters for the run/walk for past events were Santa Claus and Mayor Arlene Mulder — and are anticipated this year. Whether you’re a runner, a walker or fan of Santa Claus, this morning event in early December is the place to be. Bing Crosby (White Christmas in Holiday Inn fame) and George Bailey (James Stewart of It’s a Wonderful Life) would have fit right in this cozy, old-fashioned setting in downtown Arlington Heights.

SANTA SLEIGH 5K RUN
The Santa Sleigh 5K run will be held this Saturday, December 1st. Approximately 2,000 runners are expected and the race will result in a number of street closures or delays for vehicle traffic. Race related activities will begin at 8:30 AM on Campbell Street near the Metropolis Theatre. This will result in the closure of Campbell Street in the downtown area. Traffic will see interruptions on Vail and Dunton Avenues near Campbell as well. The 5K run starts at 10:00 AM and will run through the Central Business District and the neighborhood directly south. At the halfway point the run turns around and heads north past South Middle School and concludes at the Vail Street Parking Garage. This area should be avoided until after 11:30 AM Saturday.

— Arlington Heights Police alert

About 1,400 runners and walkers participated in the 2010 event and about 1500 runners and walkers participated in 2011. Witnesses of the event can’t help but laugh or crack a smile as they see 1500 runners and walkers dressed in Santa suits and various accessories, including sunglasses, big beards, little beards, skinny beards, antlers and more. Past events have raised money for Rotary’s local and international charities. This year’s event is dedicated to Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide.
