Petter Solberg started the Rally of France Alsace 2012 race Saturday in fourth place, but lost control and veered off the roadway during the opening stage, plowed through a vineyard, and crashed into a utility pole. Several spectators were in the area of the downed power lines and rushed to safety to stay clear of the falling electric lines. The power lines arced as they hit the ground.

The 2012 Rallye de France – Alsace, located in Strasbourg, France, was the eleventh round of the 2012 World Rally Championship season. The rally event was scheduled October 4–7, 2012. Strasbourg, is the capital city of the Alsace region of France. The rally was also the seventh round of the Super 2000 World Rally Championship — companion rally series to the World Rally Championship — and the fifth round of the WRC Academy.
