A construction crane is dangling off a luxury high-rise in Manhattan, prompting a large emergency response as a huge storm bears down on New York City.
FDNY and NYPD responded about 2:30 p.m. EDT to a partial high-rise construction crane collapse at 157 West 57th Street in Manhattan. Police blocked off streets nearby. Several buildings between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue were evacuated. 57th Street is one of New York City’s major thoroughfares.
One57 is under construction to eventually become a 75-story skyscraper with views of Central Park. The luxury condo tower is scheduled for completion in 2013 includes a $115 million penthouse.
The building will have 135 residential units on top of a Park Hyatt Hotel with 210 rooms. Foundation work started in January 2010, and construction topped out .
The crane may have collapsed in 90 mph winds.
