Cedars-Sinai Hospital in West Hollywood is renowned for treating more celebrities than anywhere in the world. Cook County Hospital in Chicago is renowned for treating more gunshot wounds to the genitals than any other trauma unit citywide.
The trauma unit at the Cook County Hospital is featured tonight in a National Geographic special called “Chicago Trauma”
The one-hour show, airing Tuesday night at 9 p.m. CDT, presents a team of young doctors working in one of the nation’s busiest trauma centers.
The Chicago hospital’s trauma unit sees more than 5,000 patients a year. The episode describes a GSW (Gunshot Wound) victim with shots through the scrotum, penis, and leg.
Doctor to patient faced with surgery to look for a bullet near his genitals: There’s an odd number of bullet holes, so that means you have to have surgery so we can get the bullet.

The National Geographic program documents the work of trauma and burn surgeons Andrew Dennis and Fred Starr, who lead a team treating victims of gunshot wounds, stabbings and car crashes in Chicago — especially the South Side.
