Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:42 a.m. Monday to a report from a woman that she fell in a sewer hole near Hicks Road and Garden Avenue. A woman called from her cell phone that she had fallen into an open hole. She reported she was about 12 feet down after falling in the hole. Northwest Central Dispatchers used her phone signal as she was talking to plot her location. The woman reported she was on the east side of Hicks Road.
Police and firefighters discovered the victim underground about 9:49 a.m. near the pumping substation behind Jewel-Osco, 565 East Dundee Road. Firefighters reported about 9:55 a.m. that gas readings and air quality readings inside the tunnel all measured “OK”. The woman was injured and was lifted in a Stokes basket with the Palatine ladder tower truck. The victim was reported extricated from the hole at about 10:12 a.m. She was stabilized and transported to Northwest Community Hospital.
Firefighters called public works to the scene to respond with a replacement manhole cover, since they could not find the original manhole cover in the area. The manhole cover was apparently stolen.
