Overhaul after fire and heavy smoke were seen by hundreds of motorists on Dundee Road between Route 53 and Baldwin Road.
Palatine police discovered 4:13 PM Monday a trailer fire behind a strip mall in the 1200 block of East Dundee Road. Police saw black smoke coming from behind the Carpet Outlet, 1288 East Dundee Road. A semi-trailer was backed up to a rear door of the strip mall building. Police reported carpet padding under the trailer on fire. The trailer was soon fully involved with heavy black smoke coming out of the trailer and blowing across Dundee Road. Wind was from the north at about 14 mph at the time of the fire — also blowing heat, fire and smoke toward the back of the strip mall building. Palatine Fire Department had a working fire, and used two 1 ¾ inch hose lines to bring the fire under control in 20 minutes. Arlington Heights firefighters responded with an engine.
Palatine Police assisted the Fire Department in evacuating of the building. There were no injuries reported.
Crews from a Palatine quint took the roof to check for extension, while firefighters also checked the interior of the mall. Firefighters outside attacked the fire, which was extinguished by 4:35 p.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
