Police in central Florida say two men were trying to rob an Internet cafe when a 71-year-old patron began shooting his own gun, wounding the suspects.
Two men, later identified as Davis G. Dawkins, 19, and Duwayne Henderson, 19, allegedly entered the Palms Internet Café, 8444 SW State Road 200, and began threatening patrons with a handgun and a baseball bat about 9:52 p.m. Friday, July 13.
In a takeover style robbery attempt, the two offenders, wearing masks and hoodies, order approximately 30 patrons to get on the floor. “Don’t none of you [expletives] move,” one of the teens yelled at the café patrons. The offenders demanded money.
Samuel Williams was sitting in the Palms Internet Cafe in Ocala, Fla., armed with a handgun. Surveillance video released by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office shows Williams seated at a computer in the corner of the café. He is seen standing up and pulling out a .380-caliber handgun. He then fires his weapon at the offenders, who scurry out of the business.
The offenders fled in a vehicle that was parked nearby. Later the offenders allegedly concocted a story that they were shot at Scott Carrigan Baseball Park on Southeast 17th Street in Ocala. Police Department officers resonded to the baseball field, but found no evidence of a shooting there, according to Marion County sheriff’s officials.
Davis Dawkins was grazed in his left arm. Duwayne Henderson was shot in his left buttock and his right hip.
