Northwest Community Hospital (NCH) in Arlington Heights has been recognized for its expert medical care by U.S. News & World Report. The magazine has released its 2012-13 Best Hospitals list in which more than 720 of the roughly 5,000 hospitals in the country are ranked both nationally and in select metropolitan areas for excelling in specific areas of medicine, as well as overall hospital care.
According to U.S. News & World Report, NCH is No. 40 in the nation in the medical specialty of Ear, Nose and Throat, also known as otolaryngology. In a review of the top-ranking hospitals in the region, NCH comes in at No. 7 in the Chicago metro area, and is recorded as No. 8 in the state of Illinois by U.S. News & World Report. NCH also demonstrated a high level of performance in the areas of cancer, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology.
“It’s always rewarding to see our efforts prominently recognized as we continue to focus on what’s best for patients who walk through our doors,” said Bruce Crowther, president and CEO. “Our multidisciplinary medical care teams of physicians and clinical care specialists are committed to comprehensive, patient-centered care that not only addresses an individual’s current healthcare needs in the hospital, but also focuses on wellness strategies and building healthy lifestyles.”
A majority of the 16 medical specialties ranked by U.S. News & World Report were evaluated on hospital performance scores related to patient safety, survival rate, reputation with physicians, and other quality of care measures. Kirk Clark, MD who is Northwest Community Hospital’s chief of Surgery, said NCH has brought together the resources, technologies, and expertise that go into building a successful and patient-centered medical and surgical ENT program.
“At NCH, otolaryngologist have access to state-of-the-art surgical equipment, a dedicated ENT surgical team and excellent anesthesiologists,” said Clark, adding that a large percentage of ENT related procedures are performed on children and it’s crucial to have specially trained pediatric anesthesiologists on hand as part of the care team.
U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Camarow said these hospital rankings are like a GPS-type aid, helping to steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges. “All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” said Comarow. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”
The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook, to go on sale in August.
