An alligator attacked a teenager Moore Haven, Florida in Southwest Florida and bit his right arm off below the elbow. The gator was caught and killed, the arm was discovered in the alligator, but the arm could not be reattached.
The boy was swimming in the Caloosahatchee River in Moore Haven, Florida Monday when an alligator went after him full speed with his tail wagging back and forth. The boy’s friends said the victim saved his own life by offering the alligator his arm. By putting his arm in front of his body, he prevented the alligator from choosing to bite into his torso.
Captain Jeff Ardelean of the Florida Fish and Game Commission said this time of year is just after mating season, and the eggs are laid. He said the alligators are very active and anything moving in the water can be considered food.
Moore Haven, known as a boom town near Lake Okeechobee before two hurricanes hit in the 1920’s, was also known as ‘Little Chicago.’
