Eugenia Trejo was sentenced to 30 months probation after a blind plea to a felony charge of endangering the life or health of a child.
On the morning of Jan. 4, 2011, she was charge with leaving 5-month-old Reymond Trejo unattended when he suffocated after falling off a queen-size bed into a pile of laundry in his grandfather’s Rolling Meadows apartment. Eugenia had been appointed Reymond’s legal guardian just one day before his death.
Her estranged husband, Jose Trejo, received the same sentence last September.
“Reymond Trejo is dead because nobody cared about him … He was left alone. Nobody cared about him, and it’s time somebody did.”
— Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Andre
Eugenia Trejo lived in Arlington Heights, but took care of Reymond while her estranged husband was at work. Her own children, including the Reymond’s then 17-year-old mother, were at school.
Although Reymond was found dead about 10:00 a.m., he wasn’t taken to the hospital until about 1:00 pm. Reymond was pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital at about 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2011. Rolling Meadows police were called to the emergency room at Northwest Community Hospital for a death investigation.
